Award Winning Weekend

Who doesn't hate Mondays? Probably only pastors and hairdressers, ya know the ones that don't have to work. I think we should start a petition to have every Monday off... 3-day weekend? 4-day weeks? Hallelujah.

This weekend was one of those that went slowly by the day and seemed to stretch on like the ocean. Simply. Perfect.

Friday after work God decided to open up the flood gates of Heaven and give us a crazy monsoon. Despite the weather, Cory and I went home searching and had some luck! :) We think we may have found our next home! Very exciting! Too bad we can't move in til August, though. Afterwards, we headed to Mom's. Back in the day (2 months ago) Mom, Jen, and I had GNO (no, not gyno...Girls Night Out) every Friday. We'd take turns planning and it was so fun. Well, life (I mean, my crazy Saturday running schedule) got in the way of my drinking habits and I had to cut it back. Who likes to run 12 miles with a hangover? Trust me, it's not as fun as it sounds.

Anyway, we tried to bring it back this Friday, with one exception- we had a boy there (I know...so wrong). Cory was our token male and joined in on the fun (although he won't admit to liking it). Mom made some more of her Cherry Limeades, because, they're just that good. We ate a late dinner at a local restaurant and my brother-in-law, Tony couldn't resist joining in on GNO and came to eat. Cory and I got in late (for geezers) and went to bed pretty soon after.

Saturday morning came quickly. I got up at the ripe hour of 5:45 (who does that?!!) to get my self together for my morning run. I met my running friends around 6:45 for a misty 10 miles. Mist + Fog does some craaazy stuff to my hair... a bird made a nest and laid eggs in it during the run, I swear. Needless to say, I came home and showered, poured a gallon of detangler on my head and got ready for the day. Cory had the whole weekend off, which was pretty dang awesome. We headed out for some coffee and then played all day. Literally, all day. Like we were 12 years old. Probably not even 12, more like 8.

Why yes, actually, we are pros at having fun for free.

Since Cory had three days off with me, we kinda wanted to "get away" for the weekend. We contemplated going camping, but for fun decided to shack up with the rents. Saturday night, we showed up at Mom's and slept in my old room. It was fun to get away from the "norm" and even better to have her cook breakfast in the morning (the whole point, jk Mom!) We haven't spent the night anywhere but our apartment (except for weekend trips out of town) since we got married, so it was fun to go back to the Old Days. Sunday, Cory woke me up around 8am (he must have been on speed or set a secret alarm). We drank some coffee with Mom and then he left us to meet his dad for some yard work.

Mom and I went and did secret girl stuff (shopping) and then I convinced forced her to go to Pilate's with me. She did really good! Go Mom, hot stuff! It was fun, despite the evil looks we got from the die-hards while we were cracking up in the back corner.

Sunday night we had the King of all Cookouts at my In-Laws. Have I mentioned how much I love cookouts?!

We ate grilled chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, macaroni salad, rolls and baked beans. Then things got a little crazy...

Have I mentioned how much I love my In-Laws?!
Kidding! We did make some home-made margaritas that were awesome! We used fresh squeezed lemonade, extra lemon juice, tequila and a splash of 7-Up. Yum! :) Of course, there were some serious competitions, too!

Focus. Don't. Let. Cory. Win.

And of course, lots of belly rubbin'!

We continued our weekend extravaganza and stayed with Cory's parents Sunday night, in Cory's old room. Monday morning, I woke up a little home sick and was ready to get our normal weekend "chores" done so we could enjoy our day off. We went and grocery shopped, cleaned, had a funeral for Cory's fishes (yeah, they both died on the same day...I swear it wasn't me, and yes Cory fed them over the weekend) and then took 2 naps. You read that right, TWO. We were invited to see Pirates of the Caribbean with Cory's fam Monday night, but neither of us had seen the recent ones, so we opted to eat with the family and head back for the Bachelorette. I don't know about you, but I loooove Bentley. NOT!!!!

Have a great week! :)

Fly-By Week

Wow, it's Thursday!? Where oh where has this week gone?? It's been a busy one, that's for sure! And I'm so looking forward to the long 3-day weekend! It's hard to believe it's almost JUNE! June is going to be insanely crazy + fun month! I have some major things coming up that I couldn't be happier about! My best friend is getting married, I'm becoming an aunt, I get to go to my favorite place on Earth, Oak Island, and I turn 24!!! Couldn't be more excited about what's to come in the next few weeks! :)

On to this week! Monday afternoon I ran a quick 2 miles and then joined my regular spin class at 6pm. After missing out on the class for a few weeks, it felt good to get back on the spin bike and work up a sweat. MAN is that class tough! I came home and took my baby girl on a walk. It is so funny how accustomed she's gotten to our complex. The first few months we lived there she was so scared to go on walks and was constantly on alert. Now? She prances her little butt around like she owns the place.

Tuesday's work day was pretty hectic and I was so glad Cory had the day off and was there waitin on me when I got home! It was so nice out that we decided to swing by our apartment pool to catch some rays and enjoy each other's company.

I'm so lucky, aren't I? <3

Afterwards we went out looking at rental homes again and grabbed a pizza to eat while we were driving around. I can't remember the last time I ate a real pizza from a pizza place- pepperoni, please!  It was deeelicious- I'd forgotten! Thanks for reminding me, hubby! :)

Wednesday morning, I went to my AM group strength training session (Workout Page was updated!) and had yet another beeeeeeesy day at work. Afterwards I went to my favorite workout of the week- Boot camp! And it kicked my butt, like normal! That is one class I can count on to leave me feeling totally exhausted and awesome at the same time!

I came home and cooked a new recipe I've had on "The List" for awhile- Meat Loaf! I'm not 100% sure WHY I wanted to make this, because I'm not a big meat fan.... hence the first word in the name of the entree... I should have thought about that. But, Cory is and making this "traditional" meal made me feel like a real, live, wife! hehe I'll post the recipe on the Recipe Page, but I'll warn you- pictures of a huge hunk of meat kind of gross me out, and these aren't the best! But even for a non-meat lover this is pretty good, and Cory really liked it!

On to the best part of the week! American Idol!!! Who watched?! Being huge country music fans, Cory and I were both really happy with the two remaining candidates. We bet on Lauren winning, but were really happy to have a fellow Carolinian take the title! We really liked Scotty a lot too, especially since he sounds just like Josh Turner- a favorite of Cory and mine (we even danced to his, "No Rush" as our First Dance!)

This morning, I made an awesome smoothie for breakfast! It was so thick and creamy and I'm already craving another one! Included in the mix:

-1/2 frozen banana
-4 large strawberries
-1/2 c almond milk
-1/2 c water
-1 scoop vanilla protein powder
-Handful of raw baby spinach
-about 10 ice cubes
-1 tsp xantham gum
-1 splenda

Yummmm!

Today's another busy day at work, but I'm looking forward to a run after work! :) Have a great day!

Weekend Warrior

Hello friends, Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend! Mine was kind of all over the place but turned out being really fun.

Friday after work, I met Mom at her house for a few drinks before heading to dinner. Mom is the Queen of summery cocktails and is always coming up with new delicious recipes! Friday she made us Cherry Limeades which included Diet Cherry Limeade soda, cherry vodka, a splash of cherry juice and a few cherries. It was DELICIOUS! These drinks get me in trouble though, because they just taste SO good! I know ingredients for this drink will be brought with us on our family vacay to Oak Island next month! :) Can't wait!!

We went to a local pub for dinner- McHales. Typically, this is more of a bar than a place to eat, but we wanted somewhere with outdoor dining since it was so nice outside! They have a great beer menu and I tried out the Paulaner Hefeweizen and really liked it! It was a light, smooth beer that started with hints of banana and clove and ended with a hoppy malt taste... ha! Who am I kidding? I have no idea how to be a "beer taster" or whatever they're called... it tasted like beer to me. Maybe one day I'll learn to appreciate it, but honestly, it just tasted like beer... good beer, but beer.

I ordered a spinach salad with grilled chicken + buffalo sauce and a side of ranch. This is my absolute favorite salad, and I always seem to crave it! After dinner I headed home to spend the evening with Cory watching our favorite show, Dateline! We can't get enough of this show and try to catch it whenever it's on. Too bad we're too poor stingy to buy Ti-Vo. Ahhh the possibilities.

Saturday morning, we were both up early to get started on the day. Cory headed to work and I headed out to meet my running friends for a quick 6 miler. We started at 7:30 and by the time we finished it was H-O-T. I'm not sure I'm ready for it to be this hot yet! We agreed to start this coming weekend at 7 to finish before the sun really got us. After my run, I ran a couple errands and headed home to shower and get ready for my sister-in-law's baby shower in Hartsville, SC. My mother-in-law and I drove up there together for the 2 o'clock shower. It was so fun, baby Reagan is already SO spoiled and has twice as many clothes as I've ever owned in my life! Too bad we can't share.

After getting back in town, we joined Cory and my Father-in-Law at White Horse, a local restaurant, for dinner and awaited Rapture. After realizing we were all still alive, and the end of the world wasn't ending, we ordered. Remember how I said that thing about always craving a Buffalo Grilled Chicken Salad? Yeah, I got pretty much the exact same salad as Friday night. This one had the addition of mushrooms and a piece of garlic bread...I sure know how to branch out.

After dinner, Cory and I went home to watch Little Fockers. We liked it okay, but thought the first two were better. Of course, it was still funny and I'd recommend it to anyone that liked the first two in the series! After the movie, we watched Dateline. Again. :)

Sunday morning, I woke up around 8 and cooked Cory and me "Sunday Breakfast." This was my first time making biscuits from scratch (of course, when I say scratch, I mean Bisquick mix that only needs water) and they turned out edible! wooo hooo! This cookin thang ain't so bad! ;) We also had scrambled eggs and coffee. Unfortunately Cory had to work again (7 days this week! Poor little guy). Since he was out running around with screaming kids, sweatin in the 100 degree heat, I felt like I needed to be doing something, too. Lucky for him, that meant giving our little home a good cleaning. I'm not talking vacuuming and dusting...this girl cleaned out cabinets, scrubbed the bathtub and steam cleaned the carpets. Ahhhhh nothin' like a clean apartment! Just wonder how long it'll stay like this! :)

Afterwards, I went for a 60 min Pi-Yo Class (Pilate's + yoga combo) and then grocery shopped. As soon as Cory got off work, we headed over to the In-Laws for a cookout. I love cook outs! Every time we cook out at my In-Laws it always brings back happy memories of the day Cory proposed, which by the way, was almost 2 years ago! Time is seriously flying!

This morning, I got up at the crack of dawn for my AM strength training sesh, then had Banana Overnight Oats at my desk and some Chocolatey Special K around 10:30. For lunch I had a turkey + spinach sandwich on a sandwich thin with an apple (you guys know what these look like, thought a pic was unnecessary....okay, that's a lie...honestly I just devoured it too quickly to take a pic). I've got my favorite Kashi bar waitin' on me for an afternoon snack and then it's to the gym for a spin class! It's been too long since I've taken this class, I'm lookin forward to it!!!

This is a fantastic week for shows!! Tonight kicks off The Bachelorette + Dancing With The Stars, Tomorrow is American Idol and Biggest Loser, Wednesday is AI Finale and Thursday is the Premiere of So You Think You Can Dance!!! It's gonna be a gooooood week!

13.1 x 2 in 30

Well...I made it! I survived two Half Marathons in one month! wooo hoo!!

Boy, is my body feelin' it too! The race was awesome, and HARD, and awesome! The hills were tough but the crowd support was outstanding and seeing all the Marine Corps out there handing out water, serving me was a humbling experience. These guys were awesome! I got to run through so many historical landmarks and really got to take in Fredericksburg.

The start
I'm not gonna lie, this was the toughest run I've endured, to date. My body just wasn't with it and I was feeling pretty weak only a few miles in, but I just tried my best to keep a steady pace and finish strong. I know being sick really took a toll on my body and only being able to run twice last week ate at me mentally. I took water at every stop after mile 6 and Gatorade before mile 10, "Hospital Hill." I took one GU around mile 8 and ran most of the race with a cough drop in my mouth to help me breath (smart, I know). But, I finished!!! This race pushed me mentally farther than I've ever been and really let me see how far my body can go when my mind (really) wanted to quit. SO glad I did it! :)

8,000 runners!

Did I mention Drew Carey ran?!

Sorry these are Proofs!

After the race, Cory and I went back to the hotel, showered and were on our way! We arrived home around 5:30 and crashed for the rest of the night. It felt so good to be home with our babies, even though we were only gone a few days!

Monday was a BUSY day! Since I took a half day from work on Friday, I had a lot to catch up on. I broke for lunch around 1 and tried to get a jump start on my To-Do list. I have a dinner tonight for the Junior Welfare League that I've recently joined and wanted to get a new dress for it. I had no luck during lunch, but luckily was able to find something after work! Decisions, decisions!

(I went with the one of the left, thanks to Cory's input! :D )

I took Monday off from working out, mainly because I couldn't even walk (and significantly needed a rest day!) but also because I just had so much to do! I picked up a baby shower gift for my Sister-In-Law, found a dress, searched for shoes, picked up some make up and grocery shopped all before 8pm. Then I got home and cooked this deliciousness:

This was heavenly and only 250 calories!!! No, that's not a joke! :)

Ingredients:
1 Flatout Flat bread- Light Tomato flavored
1/4 c Prego Marinara Sauce
1/4 c Italian cheese
Dried basil, salt, pepper
Baby spinach, chopped
Tomato, chopped

I assembled all the ingredients and baked in our Toaster Oven at 300 for about 5-7 mins. It was delicious!! I will definitely be making this again! Actually, I already did! :) I'm having a "calzone" version of this today for lunch and I can't wait!

Have a great Tuesday! :)

George Washington's Hotel

Random Fact for the Day:
George Washington grew up in Fredericksburg, and practically everything here is named after him or his mama. Who knew?! (probably most of you.)

We made it! The drive wasn't too shabby and actually went by much quicker than I had expected. The little hot British man that lives in my GPS was a good boy and only got us lost once, that's GOT to be a record! Cory likes driving and wouldn't dream of letting me; no worries though because I had other, more important jobs. Like DJ and Magazine Reader, Food Spotter, Gas Gauge Watcher, and Complainer. Pretty tough job, but some one's gotta do it.

He's got moves.

Did I mention I hate car rides???

We left around 1pm and only stopped a few times for bathroom breaks, and once for some food. Cory ate his typical 2 Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers and I demanded Subway. I got a 6" Turkey on whole wheat with lettuce, red onion, banana peppers. pickles, salt/pepper, vinegar and mustard. ~280calories with 10 cheese crackers on the side (+70 cals)

Before we left we researched hotels and got one pretty close to the Expo that was reasonably priced (aka cheap). It had 4.5/5 stars and looked pretty good. Well, like a lot of other things around here, I think it should be called George Washington's Hotel because I'm pretty sure it was around when he was. This place is O-L-D. Of course, it will (hopefully) do it's job- give us a shelter. Okayyyy, it's not that bad. It actually feels like home- queen bed, I can see Cory from anywhere I stand in the room, small-ass bathroom, questionable carpets...ahhhh just like home! ;) kidding. Gotta give it props though, it does have a nice size TV, circa 1990- perks!

The Room.

The food for the weekend

After making a(nother) run to Wendy's for a Frosty (...for my throat, of course) we're gonna call it a night and hang with George Dub. Tomorrow we're gonna check out the Expo and explore the town. Still calling for t-storms for Sunday, but we're down from 70% to 50% wahooo!! Night!

Risen From The Dead

ETA: This post is from Thursday, Blogger's been down-sorry!

Hello Friends! I hope you're all havin a grand week, it's almost the weekend!! woooo!!

I know you've been worrying your little selves over me (it's all you can think about, right?) Well I'm happy to say that I am feeling a little better today. I'm definately not at 100% but I'm on the road to recovery! I'm gonna make it!!!!!

So besides eating gross things like soup (which, by the way, I hate) here are some of my recent eats. Last night, Cory cooked, while I instructed so I didn't "poison" the food. I'm not gonna lie... I kinda liked it. Maybe I should be infected more often to get out of cooking!? hm.... too bad he reads this, now there's not a chance for me to get away with that. dang.

Last night we made Pad Thai Chicken- basically whole wheat spaghetti noodles, grilled chicken, soy sauce and Pad Thai seasoning. It sounded gourmet, it smelled gourmet...the verdict? It was awful. I can't blame my cooking skills on this one (...Cory???) kidding. It just wasn't what I thought it would be, not sure what that is, but it defiantely isn't something I'd buy again. Just sayin.

After dinner, I mixed up a version of Shae's Warm Ooey Gooey Oat Clusters oh em gee. Shae, you're significantly evil. Why oh why did you introduce this to me?!?? I used basically the same ingredients, except I had no Kashi cereal, so I crunched up a graham cracker. It was soo rich and good, thanks for this new obession, Shae! :)

This morning, I had a bowl of Banana Oatmeal. It was good, except we're out of milk and just wasn't as creamy as normal- still good, of course!

  • 1/4c Old Fashioned Oats
  • 1/2c water
  • 1/2 banana
  • Cinnamon
  • Sea salt
  • Vanilla
  • Topped with a few tbsp of raw oats and 1 tbsp natural crunchy pb
=240 cals

For a mid morning snack, I feasted on these babies:

...yum
After hacking up my lungs and annoying my co-workers; who, by the way have voiced their opinions on the way I look vs. feel by saying things like:

"Are you feeling better? Oh, well...not to be rude, but...you don't look like you feel any better."

and

"So...you're gonna try and RUN on Sunday??? You don't sound like you can even SIT. Do you know how far a Half Marathon is??"

---No, actually, I don't. Could you please explain just exactly how far that IS!?

Ahh the joys of working with men. Have their wives not trained them?! Anyway, I ran to Walmart at lunch to grab some things for our trip tomorrow, can back and ate a Cheeseburger!!! Okay, that's a lie, but it's as close to a cheeseburger as this girl's gonna get:

-Whole Wheat Wrap
-Bocca Burger (Original Flavor)
-Pepperjack Cheese
-Ketchup
=235

+cheesy crackers= 305 Total

On the side- amazing crackers I bought while I was out; 20 crackers for only 140 cals! Woo hoo!

Afternoon snack is a planned Nature's Path Mmmaple Pecan Granola Bar that I'm pretty excited about. If you've never tried Nature's Path products, get up and drive to the nearest store RIGHT NOW and buy something. anything. it's all amazing. But, these are by far the best! The first time I bought a box, Cory helped me polish them off in less than 2 days. And you know King Toaster Struedal doesn't like too much with the the word "ORGANIC" printed across the top, so they have to be good, right?! ;)

I tried running last night, got 3 miles in at around a 9 min pace. It was 90 degrees and 110% humid. I wasn't too disappointed...going to try again tonight but might move it inside to the dreadmill so these lungs can get a break. Then it's packing and taking Anney to "Grandma's!" We're leaving around noon tomorrow! :)Sayonara!

Guilty as Charged

As you might have noticed, I've been a little MIA on the blogging front lately, but I swear I have a perfectly reasonable explanation. Friday night, the hubs and I went frolicking around Charlotte looking at rental homes and were in the car for over 2 hours. I wasn't feeling like myself and was more "fussy" (as Cory calls it) than normal. I figured it was just because I hate being in the car so long and because I was tired from the week + abnormal amounts of traffic were pissing me off. But, we got home, enjoyed a couple much needed Coronas and I still wasn't feeling great. I woke up Saturday morning for my 8 mile run feeling kind of stuffy and congested, but chalked it up to the foggy mess outside.

My run was less than par and it just felt hard even though our pace was about average. Afterwards I went to a meeting for JWL (more on that later) and was wiped out. I went home and died napped, figuring I just needed rest. When I woke up to Cory coming home from work, I felt like I'd been slapped in the face and then run over twice by a train. I rested and felt progressively worse on Sunday. With my race being one week away I took vitamins, ate oranges and slept all day at Mom's (it was the least I could do on Mother's Day...get some TLC from Mom, right?). Yesterday when I woke up I knew something had to be done... I went to the doctor around lunch and (dun, dun, dunnnn) I have Strep.

(I could take a picture of my throat... but you'd probably have repeated nightmares, need counseling, and, needless to say, would never return to my blog again)

Perfect.

I haven't been sick since Christmas 2009 and now the week before my Half (that I've been training for since February!!!) my body decides to go on strike. I got put on two prescriptions that will hopefully kill this dang thing so I will be a sick-free little runner on Sunday. *Fingers Crossed*

While I was sitting my butt on the couch yesterday playing with my new iPhone app iAugment, (hey a girl can dream, right?) watching reruns of The Hills on the TV Guide Channel (I really don't mean to watch this channel, but it always happens. And yes... Cory and I are too cheap and old schooled to buy the cable box + remote with a "Guide" button...) and I started feeling guilt for not running like planned. Here I am, sick as a dog, coughing up my lungs, and I'm worried about not running... what the hell is wrong with me? Shouldn't I be basking in sickness, letting it be my excuse to watch trashy TV all afternoon? Instead, I'm fretting over my endurance, pace and automatic "weight gain" that would happen after missing one workout. Of course, this all ended when I told it to the hubs who put my crazy mind in it's place, per usual. "He wouldn't let me run if it was my dying wish." ha, paahhhlease ;)

Anyway, I think everyone deals with some sort of Exercise Guilt at some time or another- Whether it's missing a planned workout, not working out as hard as planned, or having to explain to your tennis shoes why you haven't given them any attention in 3 years. I think, to some extent, guilt is normal. Sometimes, it's even helpful- as in "I better go run or I know I'll feel guilty tonight." or "I just ate 4 pieces of cake, if I don't go work up a sweat, I'll feel guilty." Other times, you just need to give yourself a break. Please keep in mind that I am not an expert, doctor or health professional and all opinions are merely that, opinions.

Even still, getting rid of exercise guilt isn't always easy. It helps to ask yourself a few things:

1. What's the worst that can happen?
  • Weight gain
    • It takes an excess of ~3,500 calories to gain one pound. So, unless you plan to sit on your butt and stuff your face with 80,000 cookies, skipping one gym sesh won't make you instantly gain 5 lbs.
  • You'll get used to taking too many "rest days" and get off track
    • For some, taking a couple extra rest days could mean that you're more likely to fall off the exercise wagon if you stop sticking to your routine. But recognizing this instead of feeling guilty, will significantly aid in sticking to your schedule in the future. Try looking at the bigger picture- what activities have you done this month or this week? Instead of what have you done today.
  • You'll die
    • kidding.
2.What can I do about it?
  • Having a plan of action is very likely to decrease feelings of guilt. BUT, don't make it an excuse or use it too frequently (ie I can the entire Little Debbie Factory because I'm planning to workout tomorrow--or start working out next week). If you missed a workout, make an extra effort to add in a little unplanned activity- like taking the dog on a short walk, or taking the stairs, or just plan on picking up where you left off tomorrow. Life should be our priority. Sometimes family members, friends, our job (or a sickness) require our time and attention more than the gym. And ya know what? That first workout after missing is gonna feel like a $1,000,000.
  • If you're a beginner or are on an exercise hiatus, the simplest way to start? Make a plan! It seems much less intimidating if you have a plan. Schedule like you would a hair appointment, and just go for it!

3.  Is this really helping me?
  • Is feeling bad doing anything for you? Once you make a plan of action (like getting back to your schedule tomorrow) then what's the point of wasting time feeling guilty? Your body knows when it’s had too much, so listen to it. If the thought of running for five minutes or doing one set of bicep curls mentally exhausts you, that may be your body telling you it’s time for a break.

I hope these questions help, they definitely helped me put into perspective the "guilt" I was experiencing and have dealt with in the past. I'd post my recent eats, but I doubt you'd like picture after picture of soup and cough drops, right?

Please pray for my health! :)

This week's Quote:

It's a long, hard road and it's going to have its bumps; there are going to be times when you fall and times when you don't feel like going on anymore, times when you're just crazy tired but it takes focusing on that one step you're taking. That's what I'm trying to do with the marathon; I don't think about the miles that are coming down the road, I don't think about the mile I'm on right now, I don't think about the miles I've already covered. I think about what I'm doing right now, just being lost in the moment.
